◆ The authority since 2009

Canada's landmark hotels, judged without flattery

For more than fifteen years we have checked into the country's grand châteaux, waterfront flagships and resort casinos — and told Canadians, plainly, which ones live up to the legend and which merely trade on it.

About Dominion Hotel Review

The country's oldest independent hotel review — and still its most exacting

We published our first review in 2009, when a hotel's reputation lived in guidebooks and gossip rather than a wall of star ratings. Fifteen years on, we remain independent: not a booking engine, not owned by any chain, and answerable only to the reader.

Our editors travel Canada the way our founder always has — quietly, at their own expense, and with a long memory for how a place used to be. We write about what actually happens between the doorman and the checkout: the grandeur and the frayed edge, the flawless service and the tired carpet. We never publish prices, we never sell a kind word, and every review carries the name of the editor who stayed the night.

When a link on this site leads you to book a room, we may earn a modest commission from the hotel. It keeps our archive free to read — and it has never once bought a better verdict.

The method

How a Dominion verdict is reached

The same four-step discipline has stood behind every review since 2009.

01

We book anonymously

Rooms are reserved and paid for like any other guest's — no press rate, no comps, no advance word to the front desk.

02

We stay the night

Our editor lives in the room: the bed, the water pressure, the walls, the small hours on a casino floor, the morning coffee.

03

We weigh the record

We read hundreds of recent guest reviews so a single brilliant — or dreadful — night never decides the score alone.

04

We write it plainly

A signed, first-person verdict: credit where a landmark earns it, and candour where it coasts on its name.

Why the verdict can be trusted

Independent by tradition

⚖️

No verdict for sale

No hotel has ever bought a rating, a ranking or a softer line. The score is settled before a single commission is ever counted.
